They say it’s all about being in the right place, at the right time. I was thrilled to be in New York right in time to check out FIT’s latest enchanting exhibition: Fairy Tale Fashion.
I must admit that I have been (im)patiently waiting to see this exhibition and as usual, Colleen Hill – curator at The Museum at FIT – didn’t disappoint. You have until April 16th 2016 to walk down the steps leading to the Special Exhibitions Gallery of the renowned fashion school museum and discover Fairy Tale Fashion. Push the door and make sure to leave all rationality outside as the magical world that has been created here is governed solely by imagination.
Wander through the dark forest where the wardrobes of Cinderella, The Little Red Riding Hood, The Sleeping Beauty or Snow White have been carefully arranged by story. Garments and accessories from designers such as Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana or Marchesa are flawlessly featured alongside items that date back to the 18th century.
After all, this exhibition illustrates the fact that fashion really has a dual purpose. Of course designers have to create commercially viable pieces that will sell but they also need to tell people a story, to make them dream by inviting them on a journey to discover their own universe. Knowing how to conjugate the two is truly the key to a happily ever after!
